The bed was comfortable, and everything was spotless when I arrived. I met the host coming in, and he was a gentleman. He pointed out some of the art and recommended a few nearby places to eat, which were as good as promised. There was a tiny plumbing issue with the sink, and he offered a glass of Champagne on arrival to make up for it. That wasn't necessary, but it was welcome after a long day hiking. The apartment is in a lovely old building, conveniently close to the centre of Lorch.

We stayed in the cheapest room, which was more than adequate for two, with nice decor and thoughtful extras like wine glasses and sweets on the pillows. The owner recommended a great restaurant within walking distance, even though we arrived late on a Monday night. Parking at the property was easy too. It's a house with several rooms to rent, in a quiet town right by the river and a cross-river ferry. A handy base for exploring the best stretch of the Rhine.

We slept well, and the many paintings give the room and hallway a distinct charm. Breakfast came in a picnic basket left outside our door, with tasty organic juice, milk, cereal, cheese, and ham, plus a fresh baguette. The Senseo coffee wasn't to my taste, though, and I thought the room was rather expensive for a holiday weekend.
