It’s near Römisches Theater metro station and right at the edge of Volkspark. The reception felt a bit odd, and finding the restaurant wasn’t easy, with no useful signs to guide you. The company culture seemed somewhat out of place.

A quiet part of Mainz by the park, with a great location and an incredible breakfast. There are two restaurants in the hotel, one of them Michelin-starred. The top-floor spa and jacuzzi are very relaxing, and the view from up there is incredible. One of the best hotels I’ve stayed in.

If you’re travelling with kids, be careful, especially if your German isn’t great. There was broken glass on the bar table, and the bar had red lights and pictures of half-naked women. I hadn’t realized the spa hotel had that kind of atmosphere. The staff don’t speak much English either.

The view from the window was great, but this was nowhere near a five-star experience. On Christmas Day, our room was left uncleaned and unmade even though it was vacant all day, and nobody apologized. At checkout the elevator wasn’t working, so we had to make two trips down the stairs from the fourth floor. Again, no apology, and staff weren’t helpful when we raised these issues. The breakfast issue also left a bad impression. On the first morning, we were unexpectedly charged 30 Euros to have breakfast brought to the room. We had booked a room with breakfast and room service included, and the checklist in the room didn’t say this service would cost extra. When we asked to speak to a manager, they finally agreed to waive the charge. It shouldn’t take that much effort. The details matter, please do better.
