Hotel Hammer - Mainz Hauptbahnhof

Right opposite the main train station, this classic German hotel is very well located. The rooms were clean and comfortable, though the decor is a little dated. Mine faced the street and was somewhat warm and noisy. The receptionist was generally helpful and kindly let me check in early. Good value for the money. Breakfast was very good, with real muesli. The river and historical city center are nearby, and for a nicer dinner you’ll need to head closer to the river.

Good for the price we paid. The bathrooms are really small, so be careful, and bring your own toiletries.

The breakfast buffet and staff were amazing. I cracked or broke a rib and was in a lot of pain, and one woman, whose name I’ve forgotten, helped me find a 24-hour pharmacy. She didn’t speak much English, but she used her computer to look it up, gave me directions, and was patient and kind. Google Translate and hand signals helped us communicate. Other women were helpful with my terrible German too. With some staff speaking English and Google Translate, everything went smoothly. The location is fantastic, right as you come out of Mainz central station. There are plenty of taxis if you need one, and lots of good restaurants.

We had a fantastic three-night stay at the Hotel Hammer. The location is perfect, just a few steps across the street from the main train station, and we visit Mainz now and then, so we’ll absolutely return. Our room was spacious and clean, with lots of stylish touches. The staff were so accommodating and welcoming. We arrived ridiculously early after our flight, and they worked hard to get us into the room well before check-in. That meant a lot. They also arranged a late checkout when our flight was delayed by more than 12 hours. An easy five-star stay, thank you for making us feel so welcome.
