Our two-week vacation in this special, charming holiday apartment was just right. It’s in a house that’s 500 years old, and the landlady made us feel so welcome.

The things that worked well were the location and the parking. The apartment is in the owners’ house, on the first floor up a spiral staircase. It’s close to the town center, restaurants, and Thursday’s weekly market, which is just around the corner. Parking is behind the house under the roof of an old barn. Some tiles were missing, which worried me a little, but our cars were fine during our stay. The church is very close, and its bells ring at all hours. With single-glazed windows, it doesn’t make much difference whether they’re open or closed, so I don’t think this place suits light sleepers. What made the stay unpleasant for us was the cleanliness. There was dust, dirt in the corners, and cobwebs. When we opened the curtains, the dirty windowsill was right there. We had to wash the dishes ourselves using our own sponge and towel, and the cupboard they were in smelled very bad. There were two coffee makers, but they were so dirty that we bought coffee from the bakery around the corner each morning instead. The apartment was also cluttered with decorations, and one cupboard still had its price tag on it. One bathroom had no curtain or blind, so someone on the street could see you using the toilet. Had the apartment been clean and tidy from the start, we’d have had a much better impression. I’m writing this to warn others. If I’d read this beforehand, I wouldn’t have stayed here.

The location was fantastic, but I wouldn't stay here again or recommend it for families, especially those with small children. There was dust even on the stairs and cobwebs in every room. The dishes were dirty and needed washing again, and the towels had a strange smell. The curtains were see-through, and the bathroom had none, leaving you visible from across the street. The church bells were unbearable, ringing from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m.

We booked three nights but left after exactly one. The apartment felt frightening, especially for children, and it was no place to sleep: the church bell rings every 15 minutes, even at night, and every step the owners take can be heard inside. At 3 a.m. we felt someone might be about to come into the apartment. Downstairs there was a dark, partitioned sitting area lit only by an aquarium, with someone lying on the couch in the middle of the night without saying a word. The layout was disastrous. To reach the large bathroom you have to leave the apartment, so after a bath you end up standing in the hallway. There’s no balcony, and the place is pitch black everywhere. The apartment is cluttered, the beds were uncomfortable, and the blankets itched. The shower screen fell off when we opened it. The coffee machine was dirty, so we got coffee from the bakery instead. It’s also absolutely unsuitable for children because you reach the apartment by a rather unstable spiral staircase that even adults need to watch carefully. The location is great, but that didn’t help when we didn’t feel comfortable at all.

The hostess was very friendly and happy to answer questions, and we were welcomed with roses in a vase and peaches on a plate. Apart from the coffee capsule machine, which was dirty and needed descaling, everything was very clean. We didn’t use it, even though capsules were supplied. The apartment is in Markdorf’s old town, a fantastic location, though the morning bells at 6:00 a.m. from the nearby Catholic church take some getting used to. We’d definitely consider staying here again on our next vacation in Markdorf. It’s a relatively new apartment in a roughly 500-year-old half-timbered house, very nicely done. Depending on how many guests there are, they rent only half the apartment, closing off the second bedroom and larger bathroom. What remains is a small living room with kitchenette, a small bathroom with shower, sink, and toilet, and a spacious bedroom with a double bed, single bed, armchair, large wardrobe, and sideboard with a small TV. The kitchenette has a fridge-freezer, and the other basics for a few days are there too.
