Rotes Ross Marktbergel

The food was a real surprise for a small hotel in a small town, and I’m still going to dream about it. The main floor was lovely, the rooms were spacious, and the little town was beautiful and peaceful. People were kind, and there were some very nice neighborhood cats too. For Americans, just know dining is much quieter and more peaceful here if you're new to Germany. The staff were patient with my quasi-German and we managed fine despite the language barrier. About two thirds of the hotel has been renovated in a lovely Bavarian style, while the remaining third has an older mid-century modern look. They’re very different, but I was comfortable. My room looked out over the village, and the bathroom linoleum was a modernist’s dream. Hipsters in Munich dream about flooring like that! I’d stay again in a heartbeat.

Even though it takes a while to reach the place, I’d still highly recommend it. The hotel’s lovely stube served the best meal of our whole holiday, with dishes that were carefully prepared and hard to forget. A very nice woman looked after us discreetly and thoughtfully from start to finish.

My ribeye came exactly medium rare, which you can’t always count on in Germany. The staff were attentive, and the garden seating is very nice. All in all, a very good experience.

My dog was welcome too, which I appreciated. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel is beautiful and cozy in a small, colorful town.
