Mettner Hof

The food was good and the waitress was nice, but we left feeling really unhappy about how the problem was handled. A dirty bench ruined my husband’s only pair of cycling shorts while we were on a bike tour. The administrator didn’t apologize, and nobody offered to arrange or pay for laundry, even though the hotel is connected to the restaurant. We’d ordered the most expensive food on the menu, so they could at least have offered us a free drink. It felt like they might have treated us with more respect if we’d been men in expensive suits instead of ordinary bikers.

The rooms have no cooling, and mine turned into a sauna when it reached 31 Celsius yesterday. The road nearby was also busy and noisy well into the night, despite reviews saying otherwise. On the plus side, it’s an attractive, well-kept building, and the Brasil themed restaurant serves simple, really tasty food with wine and cocktails in a terrific outdoor beer garden. Breakfast was better than average too, with the best Marble cake I’ve ever had. Restaurant and beer garden service was slow. I’d still recommend it, but try for a room at the back on the 1st floor for a quieter, cooler stay.

Mettner is a lovely historic village, with easy motorway access. I stayed during the holiday season, so the restaurant was unfortunately closed. The room was spacious and clean, with a nice view of the church and abbey. There’s free designated parking outside the front of the building. I’d stay here again.

Second time here, and it’s still a clean, ideal place to stop if you’re driving to Sofia, almost halfway if you’re coming from England. I called late and they sorted me out with a room. Friendly staff, good food, good beer 🍺, and really helpful.
