Michelshof

Our apartment was neat, and our granddaughter could step straight from the terrace into the garden and the big, lovely playground. That part was great for our first visit to Michelshof. We'd picked the farm because the website mentioned ponies, cows, and pigs. Only the ponies were there, though, so we couldn't feed the other animals or help with stable chores. We were also hoping to buy farm products like milk, eggs, or sausage, as we've been able to do at other farms, but none were for sale. We won't be coming back. The website needs updating, and we got the impression the owner gives returning guests priority over newcomers.

The apartment was beautiful and clean, and the boys enjoyed having a playground right outside, plus go-karts and bikes to use. But we booked mainly for the farm experience, and that was missing. The dairy operation had closed in February, and the boys were disappointed. They'd been promised a tractor ride when we asked, but never got one. We also felt like second-class guests: the communal barbecue was canceled and held only for regulars. During the day the internet was so poor that even WhatsApp messages wouldn't go through. I'd only recommend this rental if pony rides are included.

There are lots of nearby places to visit if you feel like going out, though it's just as nice to stay put and enjoy the quiet, idyllic surroundings. The kids always find someone to play with, and each year there's something new to discover, so a holiday here doesn't get dull. Horst and Birgit are so kind and attentive, and you can tell they put their hearts into caring for the farm. It's an easy place to relax and feel at home. We'd happily return.

We had a lovely week despite the things that bothered me. The kids had fantastic play options, from the big trampoline, slides, and swings to all kinds of great ride-on vehicles. It was peaceful and relaxed, the mattresses were good, and the apartment was very clean. The farm also offers good value for money and seems especially suited to children. Outside school holidays, the only activities were feeding the animals together and riding. I wish that had been clear beforehand. My child was bitten by one of the ponies, and I would have been more careful around the pasture if we'd been told that it sometimes bites. I know accidents can happen with animals and you need to read their body language, but this caught us unawares. No one apologized or asked how my child was afterward, which was a shame. I was also surprised by the pigs' very bare enclosure of mud and stones, with no other enrichment, given how lovingly the animals are cared for. The calves are separated from their mothers right away, even though the farm meets organic standards. I know that's allowed, but I've seen other practices on organic farms and would like the calves, as well as the cows, to have access to the pasture.
