Hotel Feldmeier

We left without being served. We had a room reserved and were unpacking the car, but when we tried to register just 10 minutes after the registration window, the receptionist yelled at us. She said all the rooms were booked. I could see many keys on her shelf, and it seemed impossible that someone had taken our room in those 10 minutes. Then she tried to give us a worse room for €100 more. The service was horrible. Avoid this hotel, they don’t deserve your hard-earned money.

At checkout, the receptionist even shouted at me for leaving too early. She seemed angry whenever I asked questions, and she doesn’t speak English. The room was old and smelled of cigarettes. Check-in was about as bad as it gets. I totally don’t recommend staying here. Avoid this place.

The balcony was huge and had a great view, but it rained both days we were there, so we couldn’t enjoy it. Our room was clean, though the lighting was ridiculously dim, and the place felt like it needed a refurbishment to get it out of the 1970s. What really put us off was the strong cigarette smell in the hallway, stairwell, and landing outside our room. We saw what looked like the chef smoking outside as we came in, but we assumed most of the smell was coming up from the private quarters below, where the residents or owners were presumably smoking, since the windows were shut. The smell was so unpleasant. Five other couples were staying there with us, and they’d noticed it too and found it off-putting. I’d avoid staying there and would tell anyone planning to visit Oberammergau the same.

The rooms and location are great, and some of the other staff were doing their best to be helpful. I felt sorry for them, because the owner and her establishment tainted the whole experience. She seemed to take pride in being perversely unwelcoming when guests made ordinary requests, like asking for the WiFi password or breakfast time. The overall impression was absolutely terrible. Other hotels and restaurants in town greeted us with smiles, jokes, and friendly welcomes. We’d never return or recommend this hotel.
