Jugendherberge Oberammergau

The neighborhood looked very nice, and the Jugendherberge is a good place to stay while you're here. Just be aware that some rooms don't have their own bathroom.

I gave it two stars, perhaps a bit generously. My room was spacious enough, getting in and out was fairly easy, and I liked the international TV channels in the small adults-only room. But customer service was far from great. On my last day they wouldn't print my train ticket and gave no explanation, probably due to cybersecurity. Breakfast was awkward too: no drinking glasses, even when I asked, because the house policy is to avoid them for safety. You're expected to drink water from mugs. There were no trays either, so I had to carry food to my table plate by plate, using small side plates instead of dinner plates. The dorm bathroom had a persistent rotten smell that spread through the whole room unless its door stayed shut. I didn't report it because reception hadn't managed to fix my bedside lamp after I reported it and they promised they would. The lamp stayed broken for my entire week. As for the walk from the station, their website says 10 minutes and Google says 13, but with luggage and without being a professional athlete, it took about 20 minutes or more.

The food was great, and I liked relaxing in the lounge. There's also a place to play ping pong. The main problem was the showers: most didn't have enough ventilation, so water pooled where you stand afterward. Shower mats would have helped. Even so, I highly recommend the hostel.

A clear, comfortable hostel where I'd be happy to stay again. There's storage for bikes and snowboards, though the doors don't close by themselves.
