Breakfast had plenty to choose from, including fruit, eggs, salads, cereal and pastries. I asked for vegan milk, and an employee brought my coffee already made with oat milk. The four-person room was spacious, with a kettle, minibar and lots of clean towels. There are several places to relax indoors and outside, too. The hotel has an electric car charging point, though it costs a fixed €16 each time.

The worn furniture, especially the bed, and the carpet made the room feel unhygienic. The carpet was old, stained and visibly dirty, as the photo shows. With facilities this dated and so little attention to detail, I can’t see how the four-star rating is justified.

We could hear the street all night, even with the windows and blinds shut. A wedding party was also incredibly loud. We were on the third floor, and the mattresses were vibrating. I checked with reception in the middle of the night and was told loud parties are allowed until 3 a.m. Our TV didn’t work, and the soap dispensers hadn’t been filled when we arrived. Reception didn’t seem interested in making our stay better. It felt like sleeping over a nightclub.

Maybe we just got unlucky with our deluxe room, but it was dirty and nowhere near clean. The hotel seems like it needs renovation, and I don’t think it deserves four stars. The breakfast area was fine, and the free ice cream for kids was great. They also kindly gave us breakfast for free because of the room.

The rooms were decent, and the breakfast buffet was good. Everything was very clean, and the staff were really nice. A good hotel in Oberhausen.
