Hotel Kühberg

I booked this hotel by mistake. I meant to reserve at the Hotel Restaurant Kuhberg in Hamburg, but found this other hotel while looking at their website and didn’t realize I had booked the wrong place. When I called to cancel, they wouldn’t allow it. I know the mistake was mine, but I feel there should be room for understanding beyond rules and contracts, especially since losing that money would have hurt me much more than it would have hurt the hotel. I couldn’t afford to forfeit the reservation, so I took a train and spent 14 hours crossing the country. The place itself was wonderful: the room was spacious and luxurious, the dinner was fantastic, and breakfast was very good. The staff were professionally kind and correct throughout. My only complaint about the room was the pillow, which felt very worn and uncomfortable. I think it could use a memory foam replacement. It turned into a completely different vacation than I’d planned, but I was able to enjoy it. I arrived the next morning and missed a dinner, which they didn’t reimburse me for. That would have been a nice gesture.

There are lovely views from this hotel above the city, and hiking trails start right there. The food is great and the staff are friendly. It’s family run, and the recently rebuilt rooms offer US business-level comfort, though a few details don’t quite match the price. You can hear cowbells around the clock.

The atmosphere is peaceful and really lovely, perfect for a mountain vacation. The rooms are modern, comfortable, exceptional, and very well designed.

The location, food, and service were all top notch.
