It's our second visit, and the service has been very friendly. The best feature is the terrace, looking out to fruit trees, the valley, and the nearby hill. The tidy, clean apartment has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a bunk bed, plus a small living room joined to a small kitchen and a roomy bathroom with a shower. Deer from the farm can come around to the back, so you can watch and feed them from the window.
The Herbstritt family were lovely and took care of everything we needed during our 12 days in their holiday apartment. It was clean and well furnished. The covered terraces must be great in summer, though in March I wished the rooms got a bit more sun. Nearby shops, wonderful hiking, and interesting places to visit made for an active but relaxing trip. I even took some schnapps home.
We had a fantastic two weeks, with the farm as our base for all kinds of outings. Buses run often through the Glottertal valley, so we could mostly leave the car behind. We enjoyed easy cycling on flat, well-marked paths, including rides toward Freiburg and around the Kaiserstuhl. There were hikes for every level, from Hilzingermühle to the more demanding Kandel summit and Feldberg, with great panoramas from Kandel and Feldberg and Black Forest views near St. Peter. We also visited Freiburg, Basel, Colmar, and Strasbourg by public transport, which was free with the visitor's tax/KONUS card and had excellent connections. The final stretch from Kehl to Strasbourg did require a supplement. In the evenings, there were lots of local restaurants; the "Straußi" wine tavern and Buschstüble are especially recommended. The Scharbachhof sits above the village and valley, away from traffic noise, with a stunning view over the orchard to the mountain and vineyard slopes across the way. The apartment is cozy and superbly equipped, including a dishwasher, though its northeast orientation makes it a little dark. The beds were made, and for longer stays we could get fresh towels. Breakfast on the sunny terrace was a treat. Mrs. Herbstritt was happy to grant our wishes and suggest activities, and her homemade jam is divine. Absolutely recommended!
We stayed for a week in July and felt right at home at Scharbachhof. It's wonderfully quiet, slightly above the village and away from the main road. The apartments are well equipped, and even with changeable weather we could have breakfast on the covered balcony every morning while enjoying the view. The village is close enough to reach most good restaurants, the well-kept outdoor pool, and several hiking paths without a car. The Herbstritt family also runs a distillery with delicious products and keeps a large herd of fallow deer that are lovely to watch up close.
A lovely setting, a great apartment, and landlords who were really nice and helpful. Pure relaxation.
