Pension am See

The room was cold enough that we slept in several extra layers, and there was no spare bedding, like an extra blanket. Germany in October is hardly the time to leave guests without one. I understand the concern about theft, but these are basic comforts. We also only had a mattress cover, not even a fitted sheet. Of the two lamps, one worked. Previous reviews made us feel lucky to have hot water. This guesthouse offers rooms with or without breakfast, at prices described on various websites as modest. The word "pension" suggests a cozy, homelike, comfortable place, but that wasn't our experience. At 135€ a night in low season, I expected a minimum level of service, and it was barely met. We were the only guests on the property, yet couldn't get a room with a balcony despite asking. The room itself was okay, but the closet was tiny. The parking lot and hallways were empty, and there was no one around to ask for help. The hallway alarm kept beeping because its battery was low, which made it hard to rest. We tried calling the emergency number they provided, but in my experience neither the phone nor the front desk gets answered after 8pm. It feels like a joke. I hope no guest ever has a real emergency there, because they'd need all the luck they could get. They also advertise a shared fridge. It's tiny, at most 4L, down the middle of the hallway on floor -1. We found it by chance, and apparently it's meant to be shared with the rest of the building. Are we supposed to label our food? It feels like living with flatmates, and what if someone decides to take or eat your things? We couldn't even try it, since it was already switched off when we arrived. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place. Do yourself a favor and find a guesthouse that deserves your money.

The lake view more than makes up for the dated rooms and garden, which both need some work. Rooms are spacious and clean, and there's free parking. The garden leads right down to the lake, and the location is excellent.

The place was reasonably priced and good value, with clean, cozy rooms that were nice if a little old-fashioned. Heating wasn't sufficient, and the corridor lights flickered. Communication was difficult too. I missed a call from the host and called back, but she insisted she hadn't called, then rang me again five minutes later. At check-in, the staff on-site seemed to have a language issue, so making further requests or asking questions wasn't really possible. We didn't get the usual regional freebies, such as free public transport or parking paid for by the visitor's tax. There was nobody at reception when we checked out.
