Hotel Sauerbrey

A car problem forced me to book three nights in a rush, and we ended up at this hotel by chance. The owners were kind and went well beyond helping me contact the garage, even driving me back and forth. The hotel also has a lovely, well-equipped pool, a sauna, walks in the nearby woods, and an excellent restaurant serving local food. It turned into a really pleasant, quiet stay, and I recommend it.

We had a fine stay, with good dinners and breakfast at the hotel, and there’s a swimming pool too. The city centre isn’t particularly close. We chose the hotel because we were taking several motorcycle trips in the Harz.

The accommodation was OK, and the staff were friendly, but the owner was the least friendly person ever. It’s in the middle of nowhere and seems to be a base for motorcyclists. There are lots of stairs, so it’s not suitable for disabled guests. The online information is wrong, which I told the desk. Food was below average and very basic. I’d have preferred bread to rolls, and the salad bar was mostly pickled food with very little lettuce. Beer was expensive. There’s a good bus service to Osterode, but it’s a run-down place with most things shut. Clausenthal was better for an hour or so.

Breakfast was nice, generous and good, and the hospitality was warm and welcoming. Still, it’s a strange place. The elevator is creepy, some rooms may not be what you expect, and the hotel’s layout can leave you lost between rooms.
