Hotel Spitzberg

The staff were friendly and welcoming, the room was comfortable, and the breakfast was good and about what you'd expect at this price point in Germany. Passau is a cool city too. One thing to know: when it's hot outside, it's just as uncomfortable indoors. Opening the windows brings in all the city noise. They leave earplugs in the room, which tells you how loud it can get.

The rooms are attractively finished, and ours had a little terrace. Breakfast was excellent. If the hotel were rated 3*, I'd give it four or five stars, but it doesn't feel like a 4-star place. There's no air conditioning or elevator, our room was quite small, and the bathroom was tight. The towels were small, the beds had rubber covers, and reception closes at 19:00. Reasonable for one night, just not a 4-star hotel.

You get great value for what you pay, and the service is top level. RECOMMENDED

The staff were friendly and helpful, but breakfast was average. Our room was small and claustrophobic, with a steeply sloped roof that meant I had to crawl into bed and watch my head. It was a hot day, and the room felt stifling. They gave us a fan, and we could open the window at night once it cooled down. Our room was on the quiet side, though the street facing rooms were quite noisy. The building is older and needs renovation. It is near the train station, but around a 15 minute walk from the Passauer Dom, in a dark, uninviting neighborhood. There's no air conditioning or elevator, which was a drawback with our room on the second floor. With heavy bags, I'd choose another hotel. We were on a bike tour and had booked months ahead, but felt we got one of the worst rooms. There was no water cooker, and the tiny bathroom had only the minimum towels and nowhere to hang them properly.
