The hotel was decent and cheaper than staying in Potsdam itself, but you may need to drive into town to find food. The hotel's restaurant doesn't serve dinner on weekends. It opens Saturdays for cake only, and there aren't many other restaurants nearby. Golmé turned us away on Saturday because they already had too many guests, though there are two döner places. Parking at the hotel costs extra, but there are a couple of public spaces opposite and a free university lot about a 10-minute walk away. The rooms are neat, clean and fairly modern, and the beds can be separated. We were stopping here on a long drive home and got to visit the famous palaces in Park Sanssouci. The station is a 12-minute walk away, with trains and buses stopping at Park Sanssouci. Trains on the nearby tracks often sound their horns as they approach Golm station. We had a room at the back by the sun terrace, where people talking can sometimes be heard.

The restaurant is very good and worth a visit if you're in the area. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was well equipped. The rest of the room was a letdown for what was called a "luxury" junior suite: a whole wall had peeling paint, with dinner-plate-sized flakes hanging away from it. There was no telephone, which mattered when we needed to call downstairs, no air conditioning, and the carpet looked like it came from a 70s porno movie. The hotel is handy for the nearby university or Max Planck Institute when their hotel is booked out. The lobby service felt like a throwback to old political structures in Germany. The receptionist looked aghast when we said we had a reservation, then took a moment to find it, apparently in a big book. He seemed very flustered and kept trying to explain the unfamiliar newfangled technology of room key cards, as if my wife and I might be quizzed on it later. It wasn't exactly bad service, just baffled and weird. He wasn't unfriendly, but the whole thing brought back that anachronistic DDR service feeling, like being stopped at a restaurant door by a zealous goon demanding to know what you wanted.

The restaurant and bistro-style bar made it easy to unwind in the evenings, and breakfast was tasty with homemade options. Rooms were bright and clean, and the staff were friendly. It’s a peaceful spot with good public transport links, though a little way from the city center. Some might find the hotel basic, but I thought it was good value for a quiet, comfortable stay near Potsdam.

The hotel was very quiet, and my standard comfort room was spotless. Breakfast had a good mix of things, including bacon and eggs, sausages, marmalade, cornflakes and buns, so there was something for everyone. The restaurant felt pricey and didn’t have much choice. It’s very close to Potsdam City, which made it a good place to sleep before heading out on a tour after breakfast.
