Heckenrose

The only thing this place still has going for it is how close it is to Europa-Park. I first stayed at Hotel Eckenrose in 2013 after friends recommended it, and everything was great then: the staff were friendly, the rooms clean and well kept, and the restaurant was excellent and a real point of pride. I returned in 2019 and had another pleasant stay, so I recommended it to friends visiting Europa-Park. It seems the management changed around 2023, and things have gone downhill since. When we arrived, nobody was there to welcome us. The hotel now describes itself as a “self check-in” place, but it was completely unattended. The main door was wide open, and room keys were left on a dresser with a simple note saying “welcome, here are your keys, if you want your towels changed just leave them on the floor.” There was no reception, staff, or ID check. Anyone could have walked in, taken the keys, and gone into the rooms later. Our room was cold and in poor shape. Most of the electrical sockets didn't work, the beds were old and sagging, and the pillows were lumpy and uncomfortable. The linens and towels didn't look clean, and one pillow had a visible blood stain. The bathroom hadn't been cleaned properly, and there was dust and hair under the bed. The room wasn't cleaned between our two nights, and the towels weren't replaced. There was no breakfast service, just a small kettle and two sachets of instant coffee. That should be made clear in the property description. At checkout, we had to leave the keys in a basket by the entrance, which felt unsafe and completely unprofessional. The new management seems to be relying on the reputation built by the previous owners, but the current conditions and service are nowhere near acceptable. This was one of the worst hotel stays I've ever had. I sincerely hope Booking reviews the property and updates the listing, and I strongly advise other travelers to stay away until serious improvements are made.

The room was good, and getting in was easy. It's a perfect spot for a trip to Europapark or Reluntica. We could even charge our electric car for free from a wall socket.

A cute little hotel with modern, fun decor, and it was super clean. The staff were lovely and always smiling. The breakfast buffet was simple but good.

The food was delicious, and the chef was so kind. The rooms were really hot because the air conditioner didn't work, though.
