Gasthof Hotel Bezold

The building has a lovely sense of history, especially the amazing staircase, while the rooms are modernly equipped. The owner was punctual and keen to make our stay pleasant. The location is perfect for walking through the old city, with the main gate just 100 metres away. Our car could stay in the private parking area behind the hotel.

The hospitality and kindness here really blew me away. I was travelling solo and mostly used the hotel to shower and sleep, but they were welcoming and didn’t judge or question anything. My room was great, spacious enough bathroom, and very clean. I found the place through Expedia while looking for a good value hotel with parking during a road trip through Germany and the Alsace region of France and Germany. I’d driven from Frankfurt and decided to visit Rothenburg, then try booking in person instead of making a reservation for the first time. I walked in and nobody was around, so I picked up the phone and dialed 44. An older gentleman who spoke little English came over. He quoted 65 euros cash, and parking behind the hotel was free in a lovely little lot, though you have to maneuver around a tree to get in. I think I was the only guest that night. It was very cold and windy, and the room heater couldn’t make the place completely cosy. Still, probably the best-value hotel I’ve stayed at in Europe.

There’s no fridge or safe in the room, and breakfast downstairs at the hotel’s small restaurant was simple but satisfying. The Wi-Fi was good, fast and consistent, and the TV worked. The room has lots of useful shelves, a long one beside the bathroom mirror and another under the entry mirror, plus hooks on the walls. The bathroom looked dated but was clean and practical, with plenty of space, two sinks and a shower. It’s a small hotel, comfortable and convenient for a night or two, though it’s not especially posh or exciting. The building feels relatively new, but they’ve worked original doors and fireplaces from a much older structure into the design. It doesn’t look very organic to me, and I can’t say it feels modern or authentically historic, but they did try to bring the old pieces in.

The rooms were comfortable, clean and cosy. This charming hotel is in a really good spot, just a few steps from the old town gates. The couple who run it are amazing and extremely kind. It felt like a place to call home while in Germany.
