The view is breathtaking, and the castle is beautiful. Getting into town is easy via a path on the hill, with parking about two minutes away. The food was nice, with the usual hotel choices but a lot tastier than expected. There’s also a self-service bar room where you can make yourself a beer and take snacks like crisps or a bar, then note your room number, what you had, and the price to pay at the desk when you check out. The rooms feel too old for my taste, and I don’t like the large cupboards that look like blocks on the wall. I’d recommend it if you’re okay with old castles.

There’s plenty of space to meet or lounge, plus an on-site restaurant and free parking. The breakfast was very decent by German standards. This is a huge, character-filled historic property just south of the old town, within walking distance. It’s city-owned and operated, so keep service expectations modest.

The breakfast had lots of good options, and everything I tried was good. The hotel is beautiful and full of history, and the room was spacious, though the bathroom wasn’t. I guess the religious feel of the place explains why there was no TV in the room. It worked well for one night.

We spoke with the receptionist afterward. She was vegan herself and understood why we were disappointed. On one morning, they removed the breakfast charge as an apology, which we appreciated. Still, we wanted to give feedback so the hotel could address the service and training issues and improve its vegan options. This was especially disappointing in Germany, where vegan choices are usually easy to find. The two breakfasts were frustrating too. Although we’d requested vegan meals at both dinners, that information didn’t seem to carry over. One salad had a “vegan” label even though it contained eggs. When we pointed it out, a staff member laughed and took away the sign. That’s a serious mistake, especially for people with allergies or dietary restrictions. On the second morning, the only vegan option was one spread for bread. The breakfast staff weren’t friendly or attentive. My partner and I stayed two nights and ate dinner at the restaurant both evenings. On January 7th, dinner was wonderful. The waiter was kind, attentive and professional, spoke English, and explained everything clearly. We asked for vegan options, and he made sure our dessert was vegan too. The candlelight, classical music and dim lighting made it feel like dining in a castle. Everything was impeccable, and we left a tip. But dinner on January 8th was a completely different experience. Several candles were out, there was no music, and the doors were open. It felt more like eating in a random person’s home than a hotel restaurant. The waitress seemed stressed, uncomfortable and unprofessional, and served plates so hot we had to handle them ourselves. Service seemed untrained, and other guests had main courses brought out while they were still eating starters. She said there were no vegan desserts, and we had to tell her we’d had one the night before to get ours. She didn’t speak any English. The difference between the two nights was shocking.

The rooms are comfortable and have everything you need. This beautiful, history-filled hotel sits just outside town, with peaceful surroundings that make it a lovely place to unwind. There are no “screens” in the room, as Can mentioned in the previous review, but why would you need them? Take a nighttime walk around the property or into town for a local brew. Couldn’t recommend it more.
