Hotel am Markt - Restaurant Meridiana

The restaurant’s small menu had an Italian feel, but the food was nothing special. I was assured my salad was gluten-free, though I had cramps the next day that suggested otherwise. The staff were friendly. The hotel is small and right by the waterfall in Saarburg. My room was basic and clean, while the hallways looked tired.

We had lasagna and seafood pizza, and both were delicious. The waiter was nice and helped with everything we asked for.

The staff didn’t leave us impressed, and neither did most of the food. We stopped for lunch while walking around Saarburg, drawn by the extensive menu and the lovely waterside terrace. Looks can be deceiving, especially in a tourist area. The waiter misunderstood our order for a salad “sportiva” each and brought one for us to share. When we asked about it, he said we should have phrased it differently. He did offer to order another, but by then we weren’t enjoying the meal enough to bother. The salad portion was fair and tasted okay, though the “feta” was just white cheese, not actual Greek feta. Before that, the carpaccio had looked nice but was soggy and tasted a bit odd. The “French” onion soup was tasty, but only the few onions in and on top of it reminded us of the original. Its bread lid was pizza dough shaped like a giant mushroom. The Pinot Grigio was lovely, and they brought a carafe of tap water when we asked. We left disappointed and can’t recommend the place.

We didn’t feel welcome or looked after, and wouldn’t return. The food was okay, but we ordered Rigatoni and were served Penne without anyone asking or apologizing. The plates were dropped on the table. There were three waiters serving five tables in our area, but whenever we asked one for something, they told us to ask our own waiter. I eventually said our “own” waiter should make himself available first. We came for dinner with our two children, aged 6 and 2, and my parents-in-law. On the terrace, we were directed to an unset table where there was no room for our 2-year-old. We had to ask several times for a child seat. When we ordered wine, only two glasses arrived instead of three. Once heavy rain started, we moved inside. The waiter said we could choose a table, then abruptly tried to take the child seat away. They clearly didn’t appreciate having children there, though a child in a seat is easier to manage.
