This is a basic Airbnb or short-term rental. Be careful about telling Tengo your long-term plans, though. He may raise the rates, leaving you to lug your bags around Salzgitter. Also, for whatever reason, the internet doesn’t work in the evenings, so you’re left sitting around watching boring standard German TV. Edit: Tengo’s response proves exactly what I mean about his shady attitude toward people looking for short-term accommodation and his attempts to extract money from them.

My colleague and I left immediately. The toilet was covered in excrement, the kitchen was filthy, and the chairs were dirty. The doorknobs were sticky, too, and the makeshift kitchen was barely a kitchen at all. A walk into the downstairs hallway had already put us off going upstairs: the stair railing was half torn out of the wall. Upstairs there was also a completely open makeshift fuse box on the wall. The place filled me with disgust. If I get herpes tomorrow, I’ll know what it’s from. It’s disgusting that some people think they can make money from this!

The converted three-bedroom apartment was quiet during my stay, and everything was clean and well maintained. Each bedroom had a smart TV and Wi-Fi, and there was a kitchen and bathroom. It’s a bit outside the city center, with most shops farther away. Walking to the center takes about 45 minutes. Overall, a very comfortable place to stay.

We’ve been doing cycling trips for years and have never had such an unreliable experience. Our one-night stopover was booked two months ahead, but they cancelled it FOUR DAYS before we were due to arrive because someone else wanted to stay longer. Now we’re stuck trying to find somewhere else to stay for those four days. Outrageous!
