The accommodation is very basic. The beds are okay, but the rest of the furniture looks like it came from a flea market. There’s no privacy, either: the man goes into the guesthouse without permission. He’s arrogant and impolite, treats guests like little children, walks around barefoot, and is constantly shouting orders. His house rules are very strict and mostly silly. He must have been a drill sergeant in the Volksarmee (GDR army). Avoid this place.

The house is in a picturesque area with a beautiful view, and it was tidy and clean. Our stay was pleasant. The host is a bit strict, but it is his own home, not a hotel. He kindly took care of our needs during the night, and he kept out of our way otherwise. Breakfast was adequate, just some meat and cheese with bread. After reading the reviews, we expected the worst, so we were a little surprised it wasn’t so bad. Nice location and decent rooms.

The location near the Brocken is beautiful, but I’d only consider this accommodation as a last resort. It has a lot of potential, yet the hard mattresses made sleeping almost impossible, and the landlord was extremely unfriendly. Before we arrived, communication was difficult. Sometimes he didn’t answer our questions or emails at all, and phone calls went straight to voicemail. We arrived unsure whether things would work out. The welcome was cold and unenthusiastic. I went to the door by myself and was told to bring our “baggage” inside after we parked. He meant the four people in our party, not our luggage. When I asked about parking, he quickly became annoyed and said talking with me was very complicated. He took us to the small, uninviting room where breakfast is served if you book it, which I wouldn’t recommend. He seemed to want as little contact as possible and practically threw the registration forms across the table. We’re ordinary people and weren’t expecting a five-star hotel after our hike; otherwise we would have booked one. We had our dog with us and thought the bungalow would suit us. For the price, though, I expected a bit more, even just basic friendliness from the landlord. Someone else might take over the property and enjoy running it better. Maybe this will help people decide before booking.

We made a spontaneous one-night booking for the bungalow with our dog, including breakfast, and paid €99. The place was clean, which is what the one star is for, but the price-performance ratio was terrible. The furniture looked as if it had barely changed since the GDR era, and signs and notices were everywhere, which really killed the holiday feeling. Breakfast was the high point, though for €6.50 per person I’d expected more sausage and a whole boiled egg. At least we learned something. The town itself is lovely, and we had a very tasty dinner there.
