We left and drove back toward Stuttgart, where we found a brand-new hotel for half the price. At this place, we were shown three rooms after complaining, and each was much the same. The carpets throughout the hotel smelled bad and were dirty; our room had torn, dirty curtains, broken lamps, and dented, stained walls. The bathroom was awful too, with yellow stains, a cigarette burn on the toilet rim, and a shower that looked like something from a horror movie. Even after we had reserved, staff expected me to pay extra for parking and move the bed between rooms myself. I asked for a refund and was offered only 50% off. We’re still trying to resolve that. The website and booking photos are misleading. Avoid this place.

My room itself was clean and pleasant, with everything I needed. I didn’t have breakfast. Getting into the room was a different story. I’d emailed ahead with my arrival time and asked if it would be okay, and the paperwork said reception stayed open until 10 p.m. Nobody replied to my email, so I assumed all was set. When I got there, reception was shut and no one was around with my key. Luckily, some guests let me use their phone to call hotel service. I had no internet or German phone, and the person on the call said a code had been emailed to me, though I never received one. They weren’t very friendly either. If those guests hadn’t helped, I wouldn’t have been able to sleep in the room I’d paid for. The arrival was really unpleasant. The hotel should make sure paying guests can actually get their keys when they arrive.

The employees were especially courteous and friendly, and breakfast was perfectly okay for the price. We only stayed one night, but it was a pleasant stay: the room was clean and had the amenities we needed. For good value in the city center, I can recommend the Pelikan. Parking is available in an outdoor lot for an extra €5,50 per night.

The breakfast was delicious each morning, and the coffee was great. Staff were wonderful and happy to help with whatever I needed. It’s right in the heart of the city, and I’ll stay here again on my next trip to Schwabisch Gmuend.

The location is the only good thing. The rooms are old, ugly, and smelly, and the staff were rude and unfriendly.
