We’re here in December, and the heating is off, so it looks like we’re in for a very cold night. Really poor service. There are lots of dead flies, even on the bed. A room should be ready before guests arrive.

I really liked it here when I came in the 70s for an FDGB holiday, if anyone still remembers what that was. The Oberweißbach mountain railway was a particular highlight. I’d love to visit again sometime.

The rooms are quiet and spacious, with soundproofing taken into account, and the place is suitable for tradespeople. There’s a large parking lot behind the building, and the Thuringian Mountain Railway is right nearby for train enthusiasts. Check-in was easy, with the contactless details sent by email. When I arrived on Sunday in the freezing cold, one of the very friendly staff came by bicycle to help me. Breakfast costs extra, and the steakhouse serves delicious food except on Mondays. I’d happily return at the next opportunity.

Apparently the hotel had changed owners. The front doors were left open, and although the restaurant doors were open too, nobody was there. After I called out several times, a young man showed up who didn’t speak German. We left the next morning around 6:00 AM. The parking lot was empty, and we were the only guests. Be warned before booking. Stephan Carewicz, retired radio journalist. Postscript: This past Sunday, May 21st, at 12:25 PM, an anonymous caller called me a pig because I left the hotel after one night. I’m forwarding the threatening call to my lawyer and, for security reasons, I also have to notify Booking.com. S. Carewicz
