Hotel Speicher am Ziegelsee

The room was spacious, with the basic amenities, a very nice bathroom and a large, comfortable double bed. The lake and castle views were amazing. Breakfast didn’t have much variety, but everything on offer was fresh and high quality. The fruit, cheeses, spreads and juice were all great, and I’d recommend trying the buffet. The private spa left us feeling really happy and relaxed. The staff set the sauna to the temperature we asked for and brought a bowl of fruit. There was also a large bathtub with a jacuzzi function, a walk-in shower, big chairs and chaise longues to rest on, plus plenty of towels and bathrobes. Having all that space to ourselves felt luxurious. The spa doesn’t overlook the lake, but I didn’t mind that at all. The staff were amazing. Even with our limited German, they understood us and mostly spoke English to make us comfortable. The restaurant bar has outdoor seating. The weather was poor when we visited, but the couples’ seating baskets would have been lovely otherwise. We didn’t use the hotel’s “public” spa, but had a look around and it seemed comfortable and well-equipped. The main issue was the poor sound insulation. We could hear the people next door talking and tell which TV channel they were watching. I’m guessing they were an elderly couple. They got up at 7am and watched TV until the breakfast buffet opened at 8am. That happened both nights, and I didn’t get a full night’s sleep. For the room price, that was very disappointing. I wouldn’t stay overnight again because I’d worry about sleeping, but I’d book the private spa again or try the “public” spa.

The rooms were nice, and the facilities were average, but the food was really poor for a 4 star hotel. Breakfast bread seemed dry, like it was from the day before. At dinner the meat was so overcooked we struggled to chew it, the wine tasted strange, and hardly any of the dessert was eaten. No one on staff asked why we’d left it or whether we liked the meal. They just didn’t seem to care. That’s not acceptable for such a pricey room.

We had a calm, clean and tidy stay, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is right in front of the lake, about a 15min walk from the center. Breakfast was fresh and really nice. There aren’t many vegan choices on the restaurant menu, but they’ll try to make something if you ask. The room is simple. Get one with lake-facing windows if you can, the morning light is really beautiful. The bar is well worth a visit, too. They’re super friendly and know how to make you feel comfortable.

My first trip to Germany was memorable thanks to the chef and staff at Hotel Speicher am Ziegelsee. I have several allergies, and they made sure my food was safe and allergy free. I got to enjoy the best meal of local fish and vegetables, plus dessert, which I usually can’t have. The hotel is unique, clean and well sanitized, and I felt very safe there. The staff were amazing and went above and beyond. I’d happily stay again. Definitely a 5 star experience.
