The walk to the town center and castle was easy, and the hotel was quite nice. There’s no elevator, though, so I had to carry my bag up to the third floor. That gets harder as you get older.

The five-course dinner was outstanding, both in taste and presentation, and we were looked after so attentively. Our waitress even showed us to a beautifully laid table. We spent two hours eating and drinking in a really pampered atmosphere. We visited a while ago for a special menu that was complimentary, so it was paid for, and we can definitely say it’s worth trying.

The location near the city center is the only real plus. There are practically no parking options either, just two spaces behind the building for the whole hotel. Our family room booking came with two keys, but only one key fob for the downstairs door. They couldn’t sort that out until the next day, which was a huge inconvenience. The rooms were small and filthy despite being adequately furnished. An empty tissue pack sat beside the bathroom bin, and the cleaning staff left it there the following day. The room itself was badly in need of cleaning, and nothing was done to improve it. Some towels were replaced even though they were still hanging on their hooks, while others were left as they were. Breakfast was meant to run from 8 to 10 a.m., but the buffet was empty by 9 and took a long time to refill. Everything had to be requested separately, including rolls, coffee, and missing place settings, and then we waited quite a while for staff to bring it. They were extremely unfriendly. The selection might have been fine in theory, but it could have been more varied.

The staff were friendly, even though they were clearly under pressure, checking guests in and out while serving them at the same time. The breakfast buffet was also a positive. We stayed for one night in early September 2014 and had booked two rooms. Both were unclean, with hair and sand in the beds and floors that seemed not to have been vacuumed or only very superficially. The bathrooms, especially the shower cubicles, badly needed attention. Since both rooms had cleanliness issues and bathrooms in dire need of renovation, this wasn’t just one isolated problem. The remote was missing in the second room and never replaced. The one eventually brought over looked like it came from the trash, broken and taped together haphazardly.

The food was good, but the service was awful. Our drinks took far too long, and when the food came, it was just set down without saying whose it was. I had to ask which plate was mine. One star only because I couldn’t give zero. I’d rather go to McDonald’s 😞
