Prinz-Friedrich-August Baude

The food had some real highlights, especially the dishes with such careful attention to detail, right down to potatoes cooked perfectly. The vegetarian Spätzle were nice, though a little seasoned oil or another topping could improve them. The frozen vegetables were disappointing after the other good food. Maybe it's hard to keep fresh vegetables when they only open on weekends, and that might work better in busier times. The goat cheese wrapped in bacon was cooked very well, but was a bit too ripe for me. I like aged cheese, but that only works when the cheese is high quality, and that kind would usually cost more on its own than this dish. It's too special to just throw in a frying pan. I loved the beer on tap, and the glasses engraved with the tower were a lovely touch. The service was friendly, if a little inexperienced, though I expect that will improve with time. Breakfast was great, with fresh rolls from the bakery. I liked the coffee too, and I'm usually picky about it. From the outside, the place didn't make a huge impression on me, but inside the dining area you can see the care that went into it. The quality is solid and well judged, good without being overly luxurious. They seem to have found a nice balance and avoided making it too kitschy, which I was a little worried about with a place called a "Princes' Abode'. The woods around it are lovely, but the trail markings are badly worn and hard to spot. The ski trails have fresh signs. For hiking, take a map or snap a photo of the maps at the Baude. There's also a small playground and mini golf for kids, though I'm not sure when those are open.
