Burghotel Stolpen

I slept well here for the first time in ages. The hotel was quiet that night, though it was not very full and my room was at the end of the second-floor corridor. The corridor door closes loudly, so I can imagine it might be different when there are more guests. The room was very clean, with a good bed and mattress, and the hot shower was clean too. It has a rustic castle feel, and the countryside and town are beautiful. Breakfast was good, though the coffee could be better. The staff were friendly and capable, and there’s free parking. I’d definitely come back.

I sat on the small balcony, which looks out over a field. There are about four different seating areas, each with its own view, and the scenery is really good. Service was pretty good during my visit. I was hiking and only stopped to sleep, so I can’t comment on the rooms or other services. I only ordered fries and a glass of sweet red wine.

The waitress staff were attentive and really friendly, which stood out to me. We stopped for an early Sunday dinner after visiting the Fort, and the cooking surprised us in the best way. The tomato cream starter and the beef rumpsteak and pork tenderloins for mains all exceeded expectations. The warm chocolate brownie we chose for dessert was tasty, though I thought it was overpriced for what was served. You wouldn’t expect this kind of cuisine from the homely-looking restaurant. We’d definitely return if we’re in the area.

We had a great three-day stay, even with all the covid19 precautions in place. The hotel is very well run, and every staff member was ready to help. Our room was large and clean, breakfast had a good selection, and there was a good menu for dinner. A well-earned five stars, and a big thank you to the staff.
