Burghotel Am Hohen Bogen

We came expecting a wellness hotel, but didn’t get that experience. The pool area looks nice, though there’s too much chlorine, and parking is tricky unless you’re willing to pay extra. The sauna wasn’t working; when we asked, we were told to try the neighboring hotel or go down into town. Massages weren’t available either because the woman responsible was on vacation. There were hardly any younger guests.

The staff were friendly, the food was okay, and we found the hotel a reasonable base for exploring the Bavarian forest. We stayed over New Year’s Eve. Although some rooms, or the view from one angle, can make it look like an old castle, it isn’t one. There’s a main building and several separate ones, some linked by underground passages. Our four-flat building was quite old, and getting to breakfast or the spa pool meant walking outside for a while.

The sauna is nice, but the shower setup is limited, just one regular shower and one cold one. The pool itself is very small. We were in a pleasant little Bavarian village near the Czech border, and the rooms were nice, though the sloping roof made the shower hard to use. WiFi is available for a fee, but only in the lobby and restaurants, which was disappointing. The food was okay. Breakfast was very German, and dinner was a buffet with mostly typical German dishes, a good match for the free pints of beer you can order.

We’ve stayed twice now, and this place is just what we need. The food is good, the wellness area is great, and the rooms are clean and very good.
