The best thing about the hostel was Lidl, just a minute away. There was hot and cold running water, an automatic paper towel dispenser in the toilet, and windows guests could open at their own discretion. Still, if I come back to Berlin, I’ll do everything I can to avoid this place. I’d pay more for another hostel for a better chance of enjoying the stay. The kitchen was awful. There was moldy food in the fridge, the freezer barely worked, the plug-in hot plates were disgusting, and there were little bits of food around the sinks. I only went in when I absolutely had to. The shower heads wouldn’t stay up and there were no curtains, so keeping the floor dry while getting dressed was difficult. The toilets were just about bearable. One was blocked for quite a while, and there were only 4 on our floor. At night the motion sensor lights took far too long to come on, and were hard to reactivate from inside a cubicle. The card reader was broken, so staff had only a limited number of keys. Between the two of us, we had just one room key. The beds squeaked loudly when moved, the mattress was passable but thin, and the pillows were the worst part. They were square with uneven stuffing, so folding them still didn’t make them comfortable. There were no bed curtains either, which would have been a nice addition given how many people were in the room and what we paid.

The place was in a great location, with clean rooms and very comfy pillows. The staff were helpful and spoke great English. Just know you need €10 per person as a key deposit, which I couldn’t find mentioned anywhere online. The top bunk mattress dipped a lot in the middle, but it didn’t disturb my sleep. Rooms get very warm at night. It was pretty much what you’d expect from a hostel, and good for the price.

The location is okay, the rooms are okay, and there are lockers. For the price, don’t expect much. I might have given it 2 stars up to checkout, but the front desk guy was so unfriendly that it gets 1. The hostel staff weren’t friendly, and the place didn’t seem clean, maybe it gets cleaned once a week? If your towel falls while you’re showering, you’ll probably have to burn it. :D It’s a pity, because friendlier staff would have helped.

The location was fantastic, and the social areas made this the most sociable hostel we stayed in during our month-long trip. We met plenty of friendly people, and the rooms were spacious. Lockers were free, though you need your own lock. The staff were a mixed bag. They were helpful, but often told everyone to “keep it down” in the social areas, which seemed ridiculous to me at just 10pm in a youth hostel. Aside from that, I’d definitely recommend it.

There was a noisy restaurant downstairs, especially bad on the weekend. During my 4 nights, the common room light stayed broken. The bathrooms and toilets weren’t very clean, and the trash can would stay full until the morning. There seemed to be far fewer staff than beds, so at peak times you might wait at least 30mins to check in. The staff weren’t as helpful as the welcome email made them sound. Definitely not worth any penny!
