Hotel & Gasthaus Das Röhrl

The staff were attentive and helpful when we had questions, and the service and spacious room felt luxurious. Our room had a comfortable bed and plenty of space in this beautifully remodeled hotel. It's right in the center of town. It cost a little more than the place next door, but felt worth it.

We'd booked a different four-star hotel, but the elevator wasn't working, the room and shower were tiny, parking was hard to find, and my husband was miserable in the hot May nights without air conditioning. My sister, who lives in Straubing, got my nephew to put together a list of alternatives, but this was during Father's Day week and everything seemed booked. Then a friend of a friend told us to go see Andreas. At Hotel Rohr, Andreas offered us options right away. We chose a huge room. He warned there might be noise from people partying since we were on the downtown square, and said to open the windows for cool air. The room ended up being comfortably cool, almost cold, even without AC. Breakfast was included and perfect. There's a restaurant on site with great food, beer, and friendly workers. We went downstairs for European continental breakfast, then stepped straight out into the locals and tourists enjoying the lively area. The cleaning crew was great, especially our favorite, Tina, who served my husband a baby beer. We could sit out front for a beer and a conversation or take it to our room. There was parking, no hidden fees, and Andreas explained the costs up front. At the other hotel, they only mentioned the extra charges for breakfast, parking, and every little thing after we checked in. Checkout was relaxed, with no rush, maybe because Andreas knew my sister. It felt like visiting family. Star ratings don't always tell the whole story. Next time we won't bother looking anywhere else. We'll be happy to feel at home here with Andreas and his cool staff. There was no fridge, the bed was uncomfortable, and the room wasn't clean at all. The linen was brown, and there was a long, black, hairy shower cabin in the room. It was so cramped that there was no room to open the cabin door, and only an extremely skinny person could fit inside. There was no room service or food available in the rooms.

Despite the old-fashioned rural look from outside, the hotel feels modern inside. Its central spot is handy, with plenty of restaurants nearby, and it works well for bikes. In the room, though, the shower has glass walls and there are mirrors everywhere, so privacy isn't really assured.
