We picked this apartment as a handy base for hiking, and Mr. Eglin was always around with great suggestions for outings and places to see. The accommodation was clean and had everything we needed. In the evenings, we would have liked curtains in the living and dining area for a little more privacy. Even so, we'd definitely stay again.

We were disappointed by the €78 total, especially given how cramped the apartment felt for four adults. The “Großer Bärenstein” in Eglin certainly didn’t live up to its name. I could imagine it working for two adults and a small child, but the kitchen table barely seats two and there’s very little room in the kitchen. The other two of us had to eat in the small hallway, which is set up like a living room. Our tallest child couldn’t stand straight at the bathroom mirror because of the sloping ceiling, and there was a lot of stooping. Anyone over 1.80 meters will probably feel confined. We paid €63 plus €15 for the fourth person. That isn’t outrageous, but it led us to expect more. We usually stay in holiday apartments costing €50 to €80, and this one felt comparable to a €50 option for four. The furnishings seemed hastily arranged, for example the large gap beside the stove. Only the bathroom looked modern. Our mattress was worn, and there were no blackout curtains or blinds. The quiet location was lovely, and the train station was a 15- to 20-minute walk. There’s no large supermarket nearby, though Wehlen has a well-stocked organic food store. The landlord was very friendly and accommodating. At a base price of perhaps €45, plus €5 for the third and fourth person, €50 total, I could have overlooked some of the drawbacks. At €78, it was a letdown.

Wi-Fi could use improvement. Even with a repeater directly below the “Großer Bärenstein” apartment, the signal was weak and kept cutting out. Everything else was very clean, and the apartment had what you'd expect. The landlords were friendly and had plenty of local excursion tips. It's an ideal starting point for hikes to the Bastei, the Rauenstein ridge trail, the Uttewalder Felsentor, and more. The Wehlen outdoor pool is also an easy walk away.

A good base for hiking, and a pleasant place to stay. Things were easy and friendly. It poured during our visit, though, and with the underfloor heating on, drying our clothes was difficult.
