Der Westerhof Tegernsee Hotel

The service was really nice and the location amazing, but the bed was one of the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in. The mattress was badly worn, which I wouldn't expect at 280€ a night. The hotel itself also felt a bit worn down, with dark corridors, carpeted floors, and an old smell.

The views are lovely, and the staff and management were both really friendly and helpful. A few things are good to know before you arrive: food stops being available at the hotel around 8 pm, so bring snacks or plan to eat in town. There’s a free shuttle into town, which you can ask about before or during your stay. If your train gets in late, arrange a taxi or hotel pickup, otherwise you may be left at the station in the dark. Breakfast-area coffee is free, and there’s a self-service bar at reception around the clock where you write down your room number and what you take. It was a pleasant stay, as long as you arrive with realistic expectations. A beautiful, authentic hotel.

The room was peaceful, with thick walls that kept out most of the screaming baby next door, and the heated bathroom floor was a treat. There’s a generous fridge of free drinks, including beer, juice, Coca-Cola and seltzer. Breakfast was great, and the cakes and desserts at 3 pm tea were lovely. The dry sauna and relaxation area are beautiful too. Check-out is 10 am, or noon for an extra €25, which feels steep at these prices. The front desk speaks English, though most people around the Lake Tegernsee shopping area seemed to speak only German. The mountain views are classic Upper Bavaria. It seems popular with people from Munich looking to unwind on weekends, and it’s a big ski resort area. The hotel also appears to host small conferences and weddings.

Friendly staff, comfortable rooms with understated decor, and wonderful views across the lake. The hiking trail is easy to reach. A very straightforward and enjoyable way to explore the area.
