Hotel Fritz

I only ate at the restaurant, so my comments are about lunch rather than the hotel. The riverside setting is excellent and the service was fine. Since it’s meant to be a seafood place, I ordered the mussels (Miesmuchselen Sud) in tomato sauce with garlic and bread. It looked appetizing, but the mussels were overly salty and quite a few shells were broken. The bread and aioli were fine. I’ve had worse mussels, though these weren’t among the best, and I wouldn’t pick this place again.

The employees were friendly, and the location was good, but the room and facilities let us down. We booked a family room at that rate, yet the second bedroom was locked since there were only two of us. The booking photo showed a modern room, while ours had old-fashioned wooden furniture. The bed creaked loudly whenever I turned or tried to sit up, and the walls offered no sound insulation. We heard people upstairs talking and moving around all night, so it was fortunate we’d brought earplugs. At breakfast, the milk tasted watery. I’m not sure if that was intentional, perhaps a low-fat option, but there was no label or alternative.

We brought our own bicycles from Hanau, and the hotel’s little bike garage came in handy. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and there were plenty of towels. Staff were sweet and professional, and breakfast was a warm, generous buffet, though I’d have liked more salad choices. It’s close to Cochem but far enough away for a restful night. Weekend wine tasting is included too.

We just came in to eat, and the food was fantastic. The 1kg head-on prawns are well worth ordering. It isn’t cheap, so expect to pay for what you get. Fabulous.
