Hotel Altora

The restaurant has a fun train theme, and there's a great view of the iconic Harz train while dining. Drinks can be brought to your table on a mini train, though that wasn't used during the breakfast buffet. We booked breakfast with the room; the buffet was fine, but vegetarians didn't have many choices. The room itself was spacious, clean, comfortable, and had all the amenities. The bathroom was good too, though the sloped roof on one side meant I had to watch my head each time I stood up from the toilet. Service was great, and the reception staff were warm and welcoming. The hotel is close to the train station.

The train-facing rooms have a nice view, but they also face a busy street with nighttime traffic. I'm a heavy sleeper, so it didn't bother me. There's a second-floor balcony open to everyone with an elevated view of the trains, and they're right across the street. The hotel is close to Wernigerodes DB station. I loved my four-night stay: the room was very clean, the restaurant was very good, and the included breakfast was too. I'd recommend it.

The food was acceptable, though there are better places to eat in Wernigerode. The bar and restaurant service felt rushed. The waiter didn't give us enough time to order drinks for the table, so we had to make several trips to get six drinks. The hotel offered a half litre of beer at the bar if you skipped daily room cleaning. We couldn't get to the bar on the first evening, and when we came in with two tokens each later, they were most upset, even though we were using their deal. The hotel used to be a much nicer experience. It feels like it may have changed hands, and most of the pictures around the hotel have been taken down. I'll probably stay somewhere else next time I visit Wernigerode.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and we want to come back. The room and bathroom were clean, and the bed was comfortable and smelled fresh. Breakfast had freshly baked bread and lots of choices. Dinner was delicious both times we ate there. It was fun having drinks brought by locomotive, and booking a window seat is a good idea. The location is perfect for the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway.
