The welcome at reception was genuinely warm, and the room itself is comfortable and roomy, with a huge bed, an old but effective air conditioner, two small sofa chairs and a coffee table at one end, and a larger table with three chairs at the other. A cabinet between them holds a flat-screen TV, though most of the limited channels are in French. There’s a kitchenette, but the stove has been disconnected, and finding plates or cutlery is hit or miss. The small fridge works and has drinks inside, with prices listed on the door. The bathroom can smell of drainage and gets hot, so I usually leave its door open. There’s only one water temperature and one shower tap, which seems normal in Djibouti. Breakfast comes with the room: croissants, rolls, omelettes, and whatever fruit they have that day. Nothing here was particularly bad or especially remarkable.

The staff were kind and friendly, and the internet worked well. I also liked having La Chumere, a very nice restaurant, just across the street. Breakfast itself felt dull, though. Djibouti can be expensive without the quality always matching the price, so I didn’t expect too much. The rooms at residence l'europe are quite large, reasonably clean, and have enough furniture, but I did find cockroaches in mine. There’s a kitchenette for preparing your own food. My room’s TV picture was unclear, and there weren’t many channels. The bathroom had no hot water, though with the city’s heat I didn’t really need it.

The staff are so welcoming and the service is great. It’s one of Djibouti’s oldest and nicest places, and it’s clean.

The room is spacious, and the hospitality from the staff is good. It’s a nice, normal place by African standards, though it isn’t luxurious. There’s a police office across from the building.

During my week there in January 2017, one thing I noticed was how long breakfast took to prepare. They really do take more than enough time.
