Mercur Copenhagen Hotel

The manager moved us to the room we'd asked for without hesitation, but by then we'd already lost a night, and I wasn't compensated. The room service was poor too. They changed only the towels, left all the rubbish on our table, and didn't replace the mugs or refill the water. I already know I won't be coming back. This was supposed to be a booking at Copenhaguen globe trotter hotel, but they canceled because of an infrastructure problem, apparently, and sent us to this alternative. I had carefully chosen the original hotel, so the replacement didn't meet our expectations. I called both hotels and booking.com several times to make sure we'd get a room away from noise. Everyone said they'd arrange it, but when we arrived, nobody knew about the request. The manager wasn't available until the next morning, so we had to sleep in a noisy room facing the railway and main road. It was impossible to get a good night's sleep.

Ask for a room away from the front street. The rooms on that side, especially on the upper floors, face major rail lines from the main station. You can't really tell from street level, but passing trains squeak and rumble through the night. The windows insulate reasonably well, but there's no A/C, so an open window is necessary in summer. Over three nights, I barely got five hours of sleep in total. Poor sleep affected the whole trip and my experience of the city. I chose the hotel for its location near tourist attractions, and that part was true. Tivoli is only minutes away, and several museums are 10-15 minutes away. The rooms are tight but clean and okay for the price, and breakfast has a good range. With a room away from the front, your stay would likely be different.

Breakfast and location were the only good parts. The lobby had a strange smell, and the rooms were small, with no air-conditioning or fridge. There's no phone to call reception. The bathrooms are very old, and the TV channels didn't work. If you need to iron your clothes, you have to go to reception and pick up the iron yourself.

The room size was okay, but the bed was horrendous. With two people sharing it, we both rolled into the middle, like sleeping on an air bed or water bed, and neither of us could get a decent night's sleep. I've never slept so badly. The shower had no pressure, more like Chinese water torture than a refreshing wash. Breakfast was good, service was okay, and the location is great for a couple of days in Copenhagen. Would I stay again? I very much doubt it.
