Karibo Punta Cana

We were hoping for a quiet long weekend, and this place was just right. The pool has loungers and chairs under shaded areas, and everything was very clean. You can tell the staff take pride in their work. There's a local store about a three-minute walk away. After we checked in, we asked the receptionist and manager if we could switch from a room to an apartment. They were great about it and moved us to a roomy two-bedroom place with a full kitchen and a jacuzzi on the balcony. Our first day has been wonderful. I'd recommend staying here for a peaceful, relaxing break.

The room itself had a water leak, a broken TV, and an air conditioner that didn't work. I got no help with any of it. When I asked about the leak, Barbara rolled her eyes and told me to handle it myself. Her husband, Javi, was just as rude and unhelpful whenever I asked for assistance, shrugging and saying he couldn't do anything. The receptionists seemed more interested in gossiping than helping guests. Before arriving, I emailed several times with questions and special requests and never got a reply. Then, on arrival, Barbara couldn't manage even a basic greeting. The reception staff were the most incompetent and unhelpful I've dealt with in hospitality. I wouldn't be surprised if Barbara and Javi were trying to sabotage the hotel, because they certainly ruined my stay. I'd rather sleep on a park bench than return to this God-forsaken place. Save yourself the trouble and book somewhere else.

We went in the low season, so there weren't many tourists and the place felt peaceful. The rooms were surprisingly spacious, and the staff were helpful. We did have trouble getting a reply when we called and emailed to say we'd arrive a day later than booked. We worried about what that might mean, but it all worked out in the end. The hotel isn't within walking distance of the beach, though it does provide transportation. Taxis are expensive even for nearby trips, at least 15 US dollar per ride.

The pool was a really relaxing spot, and the staff were friendly and happy to help. My room was clean and nice, too. I spent 7 days here and had a great time. It's a good option instead of paying for an expensive resort, and I'll come back next time I'm in the D.R.
