No luxury here, and the breakfast isn’t big or the bathroom private. But the hotel has a one-of-a-kind character and makes you feel how time passes. If time travel appeals to you, this place feels like it’s slipped out of another era.

The location made getting around central Cairo easy, with the old Egyptian Museum only a short walk away and Tahrir Square about 10 minutes on foot. Pension Roma was our favorite of the six places we stayed during two weeks in Egypt, and we liked it enough to ask for contact cards for a future visit. Stephenson’s Pharmacy down the street is also a distinctive stop, with modern medicine and its own oils, perfumes, and remedies. It occupies two floors of a larger building, which we found was common in Egypt. The staff were consistently polite, attentive, and ready to help. We also loved the colonial-style sitting room, a cozy place to relax where staff were happy to bring whatever we needed. When the building’s elevator broke on our last day, the staff offered to help with our luggage. The lift issue wasn’t the hotel’s fault, and we appreciated the offer. Our room had an entry area before the main space and was roomy enough for three friends. The little street-facing balcony was a nice touch. Breakfast was included, though simple: a hot drink, slightly sweet bread, cream cheese, and jam. It wasn’t a full meal, but the warm service helped make up for that. A charming, hospitable place in a handy spot.

A good value family pension right in central Cairo. The high-ceilinged room was large and the bed was comfortable. Some rooms have their own bathroom, while others use shared ones. Triple and quadruple rooms make it a budget-friendly option for families. It has the feel of a family-run pension passed down through generations.

The front desk help was excellent, and I’d book here again. Our basic rooms were clean and affordable, and the showers had hot water. One of us did get bitten by something, but I had no issues.

The price is very reasonable, and everyone on staff was friendly. It’s right in central Cairo, within walking distance of both the metro and train stations. The rooms are clean and spacious, and you can choose one with a bathroom.
