Hostal Ca'n Tiu

My wife, son and I stayed for two nights. Marga, the owner, had agreed by email on a price for a double room. It was noisy, dirty, and pretty ugly, with ants all over. We didn't complain while there because there was nobody to speak to. Marga wasn't there to welcome us when we arrived in the afternoon, and apparently only spends a couple of hours in the morning, mainly collecting breakfast money. The following day she didn't ask for our IDs or other details, apparently to avoid paying taxes on our stay, which she probably did. At checkout I tried to pay by card, as she'd said I could. She then said we owed more for an extra bed we hadn't asked for or agreed to. I told her twice that we'd agreed on a price and that charging extra was unfair. She stopped asking for more, but then insisted on cash, saying the machine wasn't working. That was odd since she'd said it worked just 30 seconds earlier. She reluctantly took my card and tried to charge 50% extra. I caught it and stopped the transaction. She said it was a mistake, but I found that hard to believe, and the amounts didn't make sense. The police came and agreed with me on all points, even though she knew the officer. The officer also told her in front of me that failing to declare guests is an offense. All in all, a very bad person hiding behind a fake, normal-seeming front. Avoid this hostel and this person if you can.
