El Patio Hostal

Simple, clean place in a great spot, with really good service. The cleaning ladies were lovely and worked hard, and the price was good too. I’d recommend it 10/10.

The receptionist was friendly and helpful, and the pre-arrival communication was excellent. We had a double room with an ensuite, and the shower was one of the best we’ve had anywhere, with a strong overhead head and hose spray. The doors didn’t seal properly, though, so too much water got onto the bathroom floor. My wife also liked the hairdryer, which had a proper blast instead of the weak airflow you often get in hotels. It was very quiet, although the air con and fridge compressor made some noise at night. Ear plugs were provided. The room stayed cool enough to manage without air con, but my wife wanted it on because of her menopausal hot flushes. There are indoor and outdoor shared areas. Inside, there’s a snack and drink machine, free tea, coffee and water, plus a microwave. Outside, there are clothes drying racks. It’s a good place for a night or so, but the location is what it is. Behind Santa Barbara Castle, halfway up the hill, it’s about a 15 minute walk to the beach if you turn left out of the building. For Alicante centre, go right from El Patio toward the bull ring, also around 15 minutes, though the walk back is uphill.

We paid £38 for one night, a real bargain. The room was clean, comfortable, and had a great bed. We slept better than we have in ages. Since we were checking in late, reception sent detailed videos showing how to get in and collect the keys, which we really appreciated.

It’s in a good spot, near the city centre but in a quieter neighbourhood. The clean room had nice decor and was well equipped, especially the little fridge and good shower. The hostal feels a bit impersonal, though, and could use a few welcoming touches. Still, a dependable choice for a short stay in Alicante.
