Hostal Restaurante Puerta del Alcázar

It was a bad experience. Whatever the hotel’s luxury level, I expect internet and at least a bedside lamp, and neither was available. When I asked about internet, they ignored me at first. After I insisted, they told me to go to the dining room, but it didn’t work there either. The toilet light runs on a sensor, so in the middle of using it you have to wave your arms around or finish in the dark. 😒😬

The location made this a great deal for me: everything in Avila’s old town, from the walls and museums to restaurants, bars, karaoke and clubs, was about a two-minute walk away. The staff were kind and quick to help, though I only gave service four stars because not every visitor speaks Spanish. I booked the cheapest room for two. It was small but perfectly adequate for what I paid, and it was clean, with fresh towels and sheets. They cleaned it daily, which I really appreciated. In winter, turn the heater all the way up. Mine struggled and I was cold the first night, haha. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise at this price, especially to have ham, but I’d give it three stars: the croissants were a little stale, the coffee was just okay, and there wasn’t much choice beyond ham, jam, bread and yogurt. I was very satisfied with the stay for the money.

The restaurant downstairs was great, and the room was really nice too. The location is hard to beat. I’d happily recommend it, and only wish I’d had more time to stay.

The cheap rates and easy access to Avila’s old town might make this place worth a look, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Breakfast was disappointing: many dishes were already empty just half an hour after service began. The service also felt confused. Check-in isn’t until 4 pm, and the front door is often locked even in the daytime.
