Fonda Sprint is a plain, austere place built around athletes, so don't take my five stars as a five-star hotel rating. Only a couple of suites have private bathrooms, an office and air conditioning; most rooms have bunk beds and shared toilets. There are comfortable spots where groups can sit, talk or unwind, though weekends with races get pretty noisy. For rowing, this facility is an institution in Banyoles, and cyclists get good support too, including a nice area stocked with bike tools. Many major national rowing teams, including China, Germany and the UK, use it for training camps here. It's also the first choice for Spanish rowing teams racing on the lake. The food is simple, healthy and enough to keep big rowers fed, even when they're hungry enough to eat the owners. Jordi and his partner are kind and friendly, and work hard to make your stay pleasant.

We ended up paying much more for a hotel in Girona at 1 am because nobody was there to let us in. We'd told him we'd arrive between 11 pm and midnight, but he didn't answer our calls, and still hasn't replied to the WhatsApp messages. A few days before the trip, I told him our group would be smaller. He said that was fine, and that I could cancel the Booking.com reservation so he could make a new one and change it himself. Unacceptable is the word. If you're heading to Banyloes for an adventure, go for it, but anyone who wants a place that's at least a little organized should avoid this hostel.

The house is huge and full of unusual little corners, with toilets and living rooms throughout. Reception, some rooms and the bar restaurant are downstairs; more rooms and toilets are on the first and second floors. The self-service kitchen is on the third floor, with a big terrace. Very cool! Mr. Jordi was lovely and even offered us a better room. We were really pleased with the value for money. It's Bikefriendly too: they let us keep our bikes, there's a mechanic point, and after the race they allowed us to check out at 2 pm so we could shower. Thanks so much, we'll come back!

The rooms were decent and it was good value. The beds could be better, though, because they made noise. There's a washing machine and dryer, plus a refrigerator and stove.
