On the morning of my stay, someone from the hotel sent me a WhatsApp message with disappearing messages asking when I’d arrive. An hour before check-in, after I’d landed, Booking emailed to say the reservation had been cancelled over a hotel standards issue. A few minutes later, someone from the hotel called and said Booking was having a problem and my room was ready. It was around 8 p.m. Booking refunded the reservation, so I had to pay again. They sent me a payment link outside Booking and said it was legitimate. I’d earlier seen a Booking review about someone vomiting in the bathroom, but thought the hotel couldn’t be held responsible for that. On Saturday night I was alone there with one man next door. There was one bathroom and one toilet for everyone. All night he was vomiting, running down the corridors, and falling over repeatedly. The bathroom and toilet were dirty, and I was afraid to leave my room in case he came in. Maybe he lives there permanently, as the earlier review suggested. I had an important task in Barcelona on Sunday, but didn’t sleep at all. I sat with my phone, thinking about calling the police. There was also someone’s hair in my bed.

Check for bedbugs. We found them in the bed when we arrived. The employee checking us in was responsive and helpful about moving us to another location, but the whole situation took time away from our visit to the city, which was disappointing.

I couldn’t get into the apartment because it was locked from the inside and several tenants use it. I had to spend the night outside and couldn’t reach the landlords by phone.

The room has glass doors, so if anyone switches on the hallway light, it’s impossible to sleep.
