Grand Hotel Central

We really enjoyed staying at The Grand Hotel Central, which is in an ideal area for travelers. The room amenities were nice, and the rooftop views were hard to beat. Service seemed below what I’d expect from a five-star hotel compared with others I’ve stayed in, but I’d still come back.

The staff were friendly and helpful, the location is great, and breakfast was good. Service overall was very good. The bedroom was fine, though a little tight for turning a wheelchair. The accessible bathroom, unfortunately, didn’t work well for a wheelchair user. Without a commode, the toilet is too low and the grab bars too high. A metal bar across the area means you can’t get under the sink. The roll-in shower has no light, and its door opens inward, leaving no way to wheel in and close it. The bathroom light switches are awkward to reach from a wheelchair. The wall-mounted shower gel and shampoo couldn’t be reached, so we had to ask for free-standing toiletries, and the towel hooks were much too high. These details make a real difference. For a five-star hotel, the accessible rooms should be better designed for wheelchair users, especially since Barcelona overall is very accessible. It’s a shame when this feels like a box-ticking exercise.

The hotel has the feel of an old private residence, and its hallways still carry that quiet dignity. Thoughtful touches stood out too: Amatller chocolate on the pillow at turndown, green tea in the room, and chamomile after a long day walking. The rooftop pool was closed while we were there because of the weather, which wasn’t their fault, and it didn’t spoil the stay. This is one of the finest hotels I’ve stayed at anywhere. The setting is quietly ideal, on one of the city’s major arteries and near the Cathedral and the places you want to visit, but far enough from La Rambla to feel calm and safe. Anywhere we wanted to go was ten minutes away. It’s the kind of location you appreciate with local knowledge. Some hotels just offer a bed, but Gran Hotel Central lets you stay in a piece of Barcelona’s history. Staff hospitality was exceptional, and the property has a Michelin-recognised restaurant and multiple awards. It lives up to its reputation.

We had a very nice room and the bed was okay. The staff were pretty nice, and the location was great. We walked to the beach, the zoo, and the basillica of Barcelona, and caught a live performance out front. The rooftop pool Cafe was okay. The weather made it pretty cool, but I wasn’t crazy about the layout, and the view was just okay.
