The old look of Plaça Joanic has survived, which makes it one of the few squares like that in Gracia. It’s named after the land’s former owners, and it’s had quite a few roles over time: there was a daily market in the late 19th century, and it served as an air raid shelter during the civil war. There’s a playground, plus two table tennis tables for a game with friends or parents, and a large car park for cars and motorbikes. Near the square is a school called “Patufet”; children often play here at the end of the day. I think it’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon with friends or your girlfriend, even with lots of kids around.

Use the Escorial exit to catch the V19 towards Parc Guell. Turn sharply left when you leave the station, then cross Pi I Margall. That bus takes you to an entrance higher up the park, so you can walk downhill past the Gaudi features. The station itself is fine, but it’s also a major starting point for visitors heading to Parc Guell, and there’s no useful guidance for them. Google has been asked to stop listing the 116 bus, which is little more than a minibus and doesn’t go to the most convenient entrance.
