After walking the Camino and staying in more than 21 places, including bed-and-breakfasts called Albergue, this is the only accommodation where I had a complaint. I paid extra for a suite so I could have a quiet room, and added a night to recover from walking 20 miles a day. But it was over 90 degrees outside, and the air conditioner didn’t cool the room. When I called downstairs at bedtime, they said nobody could help until morning. The maintenance man agreed the room was warm, but said the unit worked and was too small for the room. It only blew air, not cold air. They offered to move me to a smaller room on a lower floor, but couldn’t say if its AC would work any better. It was also in a noisier part of the hotel, and even on the top floor I’d already needed AirPods to block nighttime noise. I reported all this to my credit card company and somehow got my money back, but then the hotel sent a booking receipt and charged me again. That first morning, staff washed my linen even though I’d told them not to, and my AirPods went missing. The manager said I’d probably lost them in the street and should be more careful. One receptionist was kind enough to give me extra water after all the trouble, but the other people were super rude, with no compassion. They’d also misrepresented the AC in the booking. I was so disappointed with those nights there.

We had a spacious, comfortable triple room, very clean and with a spectacular cathedral view. On the 100-degree Fahrenheit day we were there, the AC worked perfectly, and the French doors kept out the noise from the square below. We opened them in the morning for the cooler air and a better look at the view. The big bathroom had plenty of space for toiletries, plus a shower and tub with good pressure. Breakfast had something for everyone, and we ate enough to last until we reached Madrid airport around 3 pm. I suspect many of the negative reviews come from Americans expecting the dependable convenience and plain decor of a Hilton Garden Inn or Courtyard by Marriott. Crisol Mesón del Cid was just as comfortable and pleasant, but much more charming, which seems like what people come to Burgos for.

Right in the center of Burgos, which is a great location. The rooms are a bit dated but comfortable, and the service was very good. I left my glasses behind when I checked out, and they handled getting them back to me well.

The car park was well worth paying for since there’s very little parking so close to the attractions. The hotel is right in the heart of Burgos, with nice, large, very clean rooms. Breakfast was really nice too.

The location next to the cathedral is ideal, and the staff are wonderful. They know what pilgrims on the El Camino may need and how to help them get it.
