We checked out after just one day. We’d booked a penthouse for our first trip to Spain, for a friend’s wedding, and the place was dirty and old. The staff seemed like they didn’t want us there. Dead flies were everywhere in the room, with so many in the bathroom that you couldn’t see the windowsills. They were right beside those little “this area has been sanitized” banners left out after COVID. There were cockroaches in the penthouse too. When I went down to ask if we could move rooms, the woman at the front desk argued at first. She said I must have closed the window, trapping the flies so they died. That was about three years ago and I still remember it clearly. Even if her frankly moronic explanation were true, it would mean you expect the room to normally have a cloud of flies. We moved to Sercotel Alfonso XIII in Cartagena. They let us check in early, and when they heard why we needed to move, they were so alarmed they upgraded us for free. Our mid-level room there was cleaner, larger, more accommodating, and free of both dead and living bugs. I’m writing about this now because the people running this hotel kept my information and started sending me Spanish marketing materials in 2025, inviting me to stay at their hotels. I hadn’t bothered to review before, but if they’re this tone deaf, I’m happy to make sure I’m heard, comprende? Also, hotel staff twice turned off the lights in the underground parking garage while we were in it. We made eye contact with the woman who did it. She knew we were there.

We were lucky to find a room here. It’s an amazing hotel in a great location, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Breakfast was amazing too. We’d absolutely recommend it and will be back. Thanks for a lovely stay.

The breakfast had a fantastic range and the hotel was clean and okay overall, but the front desk seemed understaffed, communication was poor during our two-night stay, and special booking notes didn’t seem to be read. I’d say it needs to get the small details right to deserve four stars. As a couple who travel around Spain and the rest of the world, I’d rate it closer to three-plus. I’d booked a Double Seaview room at the price expecting it to be a decent size, but it was very small. I’d also arranged and agreed to pay extra for a romantic package for my wife’s 60th birthday, a bottle of champagne, cake and chocolate. I’d mentioned it both on my booking with booking.com and directly to the hotel. Nothing was in the room when we arrived. The mini bar had no drinks, there was no tea or coffee, and the room phone didn’t work. Reception knew nothing about the package or what it included. They sorted it out later, but it wasn’t much of a surprise for my wife, and I was very upset and disappointed. The phone still hadn’t been fixed by the end of our stay. The lifts took ages, so I went down six flights of stairs to reception. We needed a taxi for a restaurant in Playa honda. At 10am, the receptionist took our name, room 605 and the time, and said the driver would come in at 7pm and ask for us. We waited at 6.50 and 7.05. When I checked, she said the taxi company she’d called couldn’t do it. She said she’d rung our room to tell us, but the phone wasn’t working, as we’d already reported on arrival. We were in the room all afternoon, so she could have come up to check. They then called another taxi company, and we didn’t leave until 7.20. Luckily, we’d planned to have a drink before our 8.30 meal. At check-in, we were told checkout was at 12pm. At 11.30am, someone knocked and said we should have left by 11.

My husband and I stopped at the hotel entrance lounge bar for coffee, though we weren’t staying at the hotel. The reception and indoor area looked lovely, calm and cool, and there was a nice terrace outside. We chose to sit inside because of the heat. I’d like to try a cocktail on the terrace at night another time. We waited more than five minutes for the waiter. I’d taken a menu myself while he was busy, expecting he’d come over once we’d chosen. Then I saw him serve people who had sat outside after us. I wondered if guests sitting inside were meant to order at the bar, which would have been fine. I ordered two coffees, listed on the menu as café latte, with cold milk (con leche templada -fria). They arrived super hot. I went to have them changed without making a fuss, since mistakes happen, and figured the woman at the bar who took the order may have forgotten while she was busy. The replacements still weren’t cold, just less hot and very warm. The flavour was awful, like burnt Spanish coffee, and they weren’t lattes, just regular coffee with milk, café con leche. They should simply stop calling it a latte on the menu. It seemed they hadn’t made fresh coffees with cold milk, but had changed the mugs and added a bit more cold milk to the original drinks. I expected better coffee from a four-star hotel.

The beach was a highlight, pretty, clean and close by. We visited off-season, though, and lots of shops, beach bars and restaurants in the area were closed. There’s plenty of free parking on the main street, which I’d use instead of the hotel garage. That costs €12 a day and has a height limit of only 1.80m. We barely fit our car in. The room was spacious, with a generous balcony and nice ocean views. The hotel looks fine at first, but it’s aged, and you can imagine it being a fancy address 30-40 years ago. There was hair and dust in the room when we arrived, the shower was a bit moldy, and there was no way to lock the balcony door. Technically, anyone could have got in through the balcony at any time. Breakfast was fine, but the only coffee came from a cheap push-button machine. The gym was listed as included on booking.com, but staff said it cost €2 per person per day. They eventually “gifted” it to us and didn’t charge, though the whole setup seems redundant.
