Some hotels are more willing than others to accommodate what their guests need. I find it really disappointing when a hotel isn't open to being flexible. I know you get what you book, of course, but some places are simply more obliging than others.

We never even got to stay at Alda Miramar Rooms, but they still managed to wreck about four hours of our one-day trip to Bilbao before we were due in Gijón. We had booked a flexible rate roughly a month earlier and had provided card details through booking.com as a guarantee. The hotel could have received 90€ from two international travelers who were looking forward to staying there and paying, if they had handled this differently. The trouble started a day before arrival, when a message came through WhatsApp from an unfamiliar number. It had a payment link and said our booking would be cancelled if we didn't pay by 7pm. The message looked suspicious, so I called to check. The person on the phone seemed even less reassuring. She said charging my card through booking.com was illegal and insisted I pay straight away through the link or she would cancel. When I said to cancel it if they wouldn't follow the booking.com conditions, she suddenly said the cancellation period had already passed. She blamed me for not having paid and treated me like a criminal who books rooms around the country and then refuses to pay. At 18:57 that evening they followed through on the threat. We didn't use the link, and that was enough for them to kick us out. Good job, Alda Miramar Rooms. You won the battle, I suppose. I applaud you for spoiling our experience of beautiful Gijón before we even arrived. None of this payment-link requirement was mentioned on booking.com. They could have contacted us well in advance. You can't expect people to check their emails the day before arrival, threaten to cancel the reservation, and leave them spending their whole morning finding somewhere else to stay. All this could have been avoided.

The room was decent and the location was good, but the service was absolutely abhorrent. I still have nightmares about that check-in station.
