Set aside a few hours for the Cathedral to take in the art and design, and to pray or simply feel at peace. I’ve visited plenty of cathedrals in Europe and North America, but none felt as unique to me as this masterpiece. Its long construction is part of what makes it so distinctive: work began at the end of the 19th century and finished in the 20th, taking 110 years. The wars, political upheavals and Catholic influences in Spain have all shaped the architecture and atmosphere. It’s a must-see in Madrid.

One of my favorite places in Madrid! The church took a century to build, from 1883 to 1993, and of course a lot changed in Madrid during that time. Entry is free, though they suggest paying one euro. Go to the side door on the left when facing the church. You should also see the crypt, the biggest in Spain. Its entrance is outside, around the block at the back facade of the church.

There’s a peaceful feeling inside, with a sense of positive energy that makes the visit meaningful. In the heart of Madrid, this beautiful, inspiring place is more than a religious landmark; it’s an important part of the city’s history, culture and identity. The architecture is striking, full of remarkable details and an imposing design. Definitely worth a visit.

Free entry makes Almudena Cathedral an easy and worthwhile stop while exploring Madrid. Its architecture brings together Neoclassical, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque styles, giving it a timeless feel. Though newer than many European cathedrals, it has already figured in major moments, including the royal wedding of Spain’s king, Felipe VI. Pope John Paul II consecrated it in 1993. Construction began in 1883 and wasn’t completed until 1993. That mix of old-world grandeur and modern history gives the cathedral a fascinating place in Spain’s religious and cultural heritage.

I went on a weekday in April, when entry was free, and loved having a quiet place to slow down and take in the atmosphere. The Cathedral was amazing, with colorful details, high ceilings and a calm, peaceful feel. It’s grand but still welcoming. Definitely one of my favorite places in Madrid!
